Rgp Contact Lenses: Rigid Gas Permiable Contacts

I have always loved the convenience of soft contact lenses, but often wished for something else that is as cost efficient as glasses, without all the hassle of wearing specs all day. Finally, I came across an option I had never realized was available: Rigid gas permeable contact lenses. They are also often known as rgp contact lenses. These contacts are rigid, but they are not to be confused with the old "hard" contacts people used to wear. Instead, they are much more durable, and more difficult than soft contacts to rip or tear. Most rgp contact lenses are made with silicone, which allows oxygen to pass through to the eyes (essential for optimum eye health, and thus the "gas permeable" portion of rgp contact lenses).

Because they are a much more long term product than the two week disposables, rgp contact lenses do require a bit more care. However, with proper care and a steady prescription, they can last for years. Imagine the cost savings over buying boxes and boxes of soft contact lenses! Rgp contact lenses can also be found at any of the usual distributors of contact lenses, including department stores as well as small ophthalmologist offices.

Before switching to rgp contact lenses, there is another important factor to consider. Unlike soft contact lenses, which are immediately comfortable for most people when they wear them, rgp contact lenses take some time (usually approximately a week) to get used to before they are comfortable. Once that transition period is past, however, as long as the person continues to wear the contacts regularly, they can be just as comfortable

There are additional advantages to switching to gas permeable contacts. They often provide much clearer, sharper vision than is available with soft contact lenses. Until recently, they often provided a far greater flow of oxygen to the eyes as well. Recently some soft contacts have developed the technology to have comparable oxygen levels. In addition, rgp contact lenses offer a clearer, more comfortable option for people with astigmatism or presbyopia. Presbyopia is a condition, usually beginning when a person is about 40, in which the eye no longer clearly focuses at all distances. Rpg contacts are also excellent for people with keratoconus, where vision is disturbed due to a cone shaped cornea.

I have been very happy with my disposables in the past, but given all of the possible benefits of gas permeable contacts, I think now might be the time for a change.
